Buenos dias Harriet! Como estas? Me llamo Robert y yo hablamos un poco de espanol. Muy poco!
I see you are interested in working in Spain, any particular area?
Buenos dias
Estoy muy bien gracias, como estas? Yo hablo español un poco también..Hopefully i will be in madrid at the end of january, i’m not sure if i will work or not but i was wondering what jobs there are available to those who aren’t fluent in spanish?
I was just speaking to one of my colleagues and he said that people who have been on the programme have found bar work or au pair/nanny jobs fairly easy to come by even if they are not fluent in Spanish.
I think the problem you might find this time though is that unemployment in Spain is very high right now so that could make finding a job more difficult than usual. On the plus side, you are an EU resident so there are no visa restrictions to be considered when applying for jobs out there and if you went on the Language Assistant programme your time is totally your own outside of the 15 hours a week you spend teaching the family.
It’s always worth considering a more formal TEFL position when you get out there as well, most colleges don’t require teachers to be fluent in the native language.
Hope this helps, if you go please let me know how you find it? I have been planning my escape to Barcelona for a while now so any tips about life in Spain would be most welcome
Thank you so much for the information, it has been very helpful! I’ve actually already done a two day TEFL course so hopefully i’ll be able to put it to use if i do end up going and i’ll let you know how everything goes
Hi Harriet, I’m also planning on going to Madrid at the end of January, so we’re kinda in the same boat with looking for jobs! Maybe we can meet up there and practice spanish?
Hi Cantarinha, Yeah that sounds good to me
I sent my application form off on thursday so just waiting for the next step, quite excited! I’m SO excited as well
Can’t wait to be there and start speaking all that spanish
Where are you from??
same same, love spanish! I’m from south west of england, in exeter..you? I’m from Toronto, Canada actually… I guess most people here are from the UK?
I’m not actually sure, i’ve only just joined WAVAengage to get some advice about the language assistant programme..Toronto sounds a lot more exciting than exeter.
Well I don’t know what exeter is like, but Toronto is a pretty cool place to live. You should come visit one day

I guess wavaengage is a bit new, so it will probably take some time to get the activity up. But i’m sure once our trips approach we’ll be able to get some detailed tips. It’s alright, pretty small but i like it
Definitely want to visit Toronto..Yeah i agree, so looking forward to hearing more about the programme and actually getting everything sorted. Yeah me too! I’m just worried about how long it might take to get matched up with a family… I think i read somewhere they tend to wait until the last minute… I would really like to have an idea of dates, so I can plan my other travels, as well as book flights! But I guess we’ll see what happens…
